It appears increasingly likely that Everton’s fight for survival in the Premier League will depend on the outcomes of two upcoming hearings later this season.
On Monday, the club was referred by the Premier League to a commission for an alleged breach of profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) during the 2022-23 season.
This development comes on the heels of a 10-point deduction imposed in November for another PSR breach in the 2021-22 season—a decision that is currently under appeal.
So, what’s happening, and what are the chances of Everton avoiding another significant points deduction? Moreover, how detrimental could this be to their efforts to stave off relegation this season?
Wait, haven’t Everton already faced charges? Could they potentially lose points again this season?
The short answer is yes to both questions.
After a hearing in October, Everton was found to have breached PSR by £19.5 million (now $24.8 million), resulting in a 10-point deduction—the most substantial sporting sanction in Premier League history. The club has appealed the decision, denouncing it as “wholly disproportionate” and “unjust.”
Clubs are allowed to incur losses of up to £105 million over a three-year period, factoring in all permissible deductions. These deductions include expenses on community schemes, academy and women’s teams, infrastructure projects, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
